PHL’s Q1 rice harvest record-high at 4.5MT per hectare —Piñol

The Philippine rice harvest for the first quarter of 2017 was record-high, the Department of Agriculture has reported.

DzBB on Thursday reported that DA Secretary Manny Piñol said that Q1 rice harvest  was at an average of 4.5 metric tons (MT) per hectare.

Piñol said that the national average in past harvest seasons was at 3.9 MT per hectare.

Also, he said that this June, the average household rice supply nationwide could last 44 days.

Despite the record-high harvest, however, Piñol said that the country needs to import rice to fill up the short fall, which the secretary did not elaborate in the report.
