Promising market says US meat exporters

The WTO ruled in favour of the US recently in a dispute with Indonesia over its complex and opaque import requirements for beef and beef products. The ruling is expected to open up significant new export opportunities for the US beef industry in the Indonesian market. Philip Seng, CEO of US Meat Export Federation (USMEF), said: “We are pleased with the outcome of this case and wish to thank the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) for its effective presentation of the legal arguments against Indonesia’s import controls.
Indonesia as a promising market. It is the fourth most populous country in the world, but with per capita beef consumption of only 3.4kg Indonesia has almost unlimited potential to become one of the world’s largest beef importing countries.” Meanwhile, Robert Lighthizer of USTR called it a “resounding victory for the US that should result in increased export opportunities for US farmers and ranchers as well as Indonesian consumer access to high-quality US agriculture products.
