Romania. Corn S&D balance, April 2017

According to preliminary estimates of Romania’s Ag Ministry, farmers in the country expanded corn planted area for the 2017 harvest to 2620 Th ha because of a shortfall in last year’s fall planting. As of today, planting has been completed almost all over the country in good weather conditions.

A sharp cold spell with snowfalls on April 19-20 did not cause any considerable damage to corn crops because it was of short duration. Moreover, this precipitation replenished soil moisture whose shortage had concerned farmers, reports UkrAgroConsult.

At the moment, crops develop in favorable weather conditions. Romanian meteorologists forecast moderate temperatures and sufficient precipitation in May that will lead to moisture accumulation ahead of the dry summer. However, they predict another precipitation deficit in the south of Romania as soon as June.

UkrAgroConsult forecasts yield remains at the current season’s level with crop is somewhat higher than last year.
