Romania. Crop Conditions.

Last week excessive air temperature regime remained in the Southern and South-Eastern regions of Romania. Air temperatures exceeded the norms by 2-6 ºС and varied within +18..+28ºС with maximums reaching +32ºС in the South. Rains were observed in the Central parts and lower quantities in the Eastern and Southern parts. As last year, considerable lack of soil moisture hampered the development of corn and sunflower in the North-Eastern parts at the background of high air temperatures.

Depending on the sowing terms corn plants are at the stage of wax ripeness all over the country. Due to excessive temperature regime and rapid maturation processes corn plants in the Southern regions have reached complete maturity stage and farmers started harvesting works. Farmers of Muntenia region (Teleorman county) report on highly damaged corn and sunflower plants due to the heat.

Plants of sunflower are at the stage of wax and complete maturity. Farmers of Western and Southern regions continue massive harvesting of sunflower. Moreover, farmers have started preparatory works for winter crops sowing, hampered by lack of soil moisture in the Southern and South-Eastern areas. In the Southern regions optimal terms for rapeseed have started on August, 25 and will last till September, 15.
