Romania. High grain crop doesn`t mean record exports

In the first half of the current season Romania remained visible supplier of grains on the extra and intra EU destinations. Over July-December 2017/18 exports of key grain commodities – wheat, barley and corn were almost in line with last year pace, reports UkrAgroConsult.

It should be noted that in 2017 Romania gathered second largest grain crop – 21.1 MMT (+1.11 MMT compared to last season). This season logistical issues and tough competition, particularly on wheat export market, are major obstacles for Romania on its way to export another record volume of grains.

Decrease in wheat exports is seen due to high competition from Russia on Egyptian destination.

As for barley shipments, this season situation seems better as export pace is 17% higher than over July-December 2016/17.

In the corn segment tough competition is seen from South America, which is also a major obstacle to higher export. The situation may change in the second half of the season, but current tendency shows that Romania should continue to struggle for new markets at the background of record supply of grain on the world market.
