Romania. Hot weather may damage corn crops


Elevated temperatures (2-4ºС above normal) were observed in the country last week. The average daytime air temperature was within 19-31ºС.

Heavy precipitation events occurred everywhere over the reporting week. They totaled 25-35 mm at the time (162-200% of normal) that favored crop development. The west received less precipitation: 5-10 mm (33-65%). It occurred in the form of hail in some regions.

Moisture supply available to corn plants (0-100-cm soil layer) is at good and fair levels almost all over corn growing regions. Local shortages are reported in the south-west and south-east. Excessively hot weather (+32..+35ºС) is expected in the country’s key growing regions this week. It may damage corn crops, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Winter barley and winter wheat are at the milky ripeness stage. They have proceeded to waxy and full ripeness in southern areas where enough soil moisture is available. Farmers in the south continue harvesting winter barley and rape.

Sunflower plants have come to the stage of head formation, or even to the flowering stage in the south.
