Romania prepares for sunflower harvesting campaign

16.08.2016

Last week air temperature decrease was observed all over the territory of Romania. Daily air temperatures averaged within norms for the given period +15..+27ºС with maximums reaching +33ºС in the South. In the North-West they were lower than the multiyear norms.

Productive rains were observed in the Northern, North-Eastern and Central parts of the country (25-35 mm) and their lower amount in the South (10-15 mm). Such weather conditions were beneficial for replenishment of soil moisture content and were favorable for development of spring crops, though extensive areas of soybean and corn had been affected by recent drought, which lowered their high crop potential. Sunflower plants were less affected.

Depending on the sowing terms corn plants are at the stage of milky ripeness and in some places - wax ripeness. Due to excessive temperature regime and rapid maturation processes some plants have reached complete maturity stage. Due to high temperature stress, yellowing and withering of corn leaves is observed at extensive parts of fields and can cause higher amount of shriveled grains in the corn ears.

Plants of sunflower are at the stage of wax maturity and in some places of complete maturity. Plants condition is mainly good. Early-sown varieties in the Southern parts reached complete maturity. Harvesting campaign is expected to start late in August -early in September, which is in average 10-14 days earlier than usual terms.
