Romania. Unseasonably cold weather on March 11-20

Cold weather came again to Romania this past week. Air temperatures were 6..9°С below long-term normal almost all over the country. Daytime air temperature varied within -5..+4°С during the week. It even hit -11°С in the north on March 21.

Abundant precipitation occurred in the south and south-east (30-50 mm over the week) as well as in the north (some 25 mm) that protected winter crops against winter-kill. Icy rain was observed in some localities that is an unusual event in Romania at this time.

The risk of winter-kill only persists locally in the western regions, which were free of snow. Winter crops that had woken up from dormancy and proceeded to the stem elongation stage were also exposed to the risk of damage by late frost, reports UkrAgroConsult.

The cold snap slowed down the pace of fieldwork.
