Romania: wheat crop and export prospects for 2017/18 season

Romanian wheat exports are to hit a record high this season. According to UkrAgroConsult data, Romania exported 4537 KMT of wheat in MY 2016/17 (July-December), or twice as much as at the same time last season.  In the period under review, shipments increased to almost all key destinations because of a competitive price of Romanian offers in the world market.

According to UkrAgroConsult, export shipments from Romania are expected to fall by 10-15% in the 2017/18 season in view of shrunk production.

Meanwhile, the crop outlook will depend on this year’s spring weather features. According to local meteorologists, the soil moisture content in the 0-100-cm layer is currently not enough for normal development of winter wheat plants. However, the situation may be improved by rains, which are predicted to become more abundant late in March and early in April. This factor may enhance Romania’s chances to get a richer wheat crop.
