Romania. Wheat exports to the 3rd countries are 4% below 5-year average

14.06.2018

According to official data, over July-March 2017/18 Romania exported 4700 KMT of wheat, which was 23% lower than over the same period last season. In 2016/17 total wheat exports were record high – 6700 KMT.

Over June-March 2017/18 exports to extra-EU destinations reached 3223 KMT against 5040 KMT y/y (-36%).  It should be noted that export pace to the 3rd countries is 4% lower than 5-year average for Romania despite record high wheat crop, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Among the third countries Egypt, Jordan and Libya remain the top buyers of Romanian wheat. The reason for lower supplies is the loss of Vietnamese market to Russia and the market of Morocco to France. Over July-March 2016/17 these countries imported 838 KMT and 552 KMT, correspondingly.

Though, pace of exports to the domestic market of EU is record high this season (+95% compared to 5-year average) due to high demand from Spain and Italy.

As for prospects of 2018/19 season, wheat production in Romania will decrease due to lower yield. High air temperatures (4-6°С above multi-year normals) dominate the entire country. Soil drought (0-100 cm layer) remains in the north-east and south-east of Romania.

As a result of lower crop, wheat export potential of 2018/19 season will decline, UkrAgroConsult’s analysts note.
