Romania's wheat crop rises 7% in 2016 - media

Romania harvested nearly 8.41 million tonnes of wheat in 2016, up 7% on the year, posting a 10-year high output of 4 tonnes per hectare, agriculture minister Achim Irimescu told local media on Sunday.

In 2016, Romania put under wheat 2.075 million hectares, versus 2.04 million hectares a year earlier, Irimescu told national Agerpres news agency.

Last year, Romania harvested nearly 7.85 million tonnes of wheat, up 3.5% from 2014.

The country's maize crop was greatly affected by drought, as 350,000 hectares have been ruined in proportions ranging from 30% to 70%, the minister noted.

In 2015, Romania's maize crop amounted to 8.87 million tonnes, the second biggest in the EU despite a drop by 26%. As much as 2.52 million hectares were sown with maize, slightly more than in 2014.

Sunflower production was affected by drought too and is expected to amount some 1.74 tonnes, down from last year's 1.76 million tonnes, Irimescu said.
