Russia is to expand plantings of spring barley and pulses


According to preliminary information of the regional agricultural authorities, 2018 plantings will total 80.4 Ml ha that is up 187.4 Th ha from 2017 (80.2 Ml ha).

It is projected to seed 53.4 Ml ha to spring crops (100.1% of last year’s 53.3 Ml ha). Growers are going to sow spring cereals and pulses on 31 Ml ha that is 99.6% of last year’s 31.2 Ml ha. 

Farmers are expected to increase plantings of spring barley by 102.3 Th ha (to 7637 Th ha), pulses by 147.6 Th ha (to 2396.9 Th ha) and millet acreage by 21.2 Th ha (to 289.3 Th ha), reports UkrAgroConsult.

The optimization of planted acreage of the top oil crop – sunflower for oilseed – is still under way. Its 2018 size is expected at 7561.2 Th ha, i.e. 335.7 Th ha less than in 2017 (7896.9 Th ha).

As a reminder, Russian winter cereal plantings for the 2018 harvest total 17.1 Ml ha (17.4 Ml ha in 2017). According to the agricultural authorities in Russia’s regions, 94.8% of them are in good and fair condition.
