Russia. New-crop grain quality preliminarily assessed

15.08.2018

Federal State-Funded Institution “Federal Center of Quality and Safety Assurance for Grain and Grain Products” reports preliminary quality assessment of grain from the new 2018 crop as of August 6, 2018.

Countrywide, the breakdown of the total volume of surveyed wheat grain by class looks as follows:

  • 2nd class wheat – 0.02%;
  • 3rd class wheat – 18.4%
  • 4th class wheat – 53.3%;
  • 5th class wheat – 26.8%.

The share of 1st-4th class wheat in the total volume of surveyed wheat grain by Russian region is as follows:

  • Southern federal district – 74.0%;
  • North-Caucasian federal district – 79.9%.

At the same time, harvesting campaign continues in Russia. Wheat has been harvested on half of planned area, reports UkrAgroConsult. Rain fell almost everywhere by August 10 (20-25 mm of precipitation over the ten days, locally up to 30-40 mm and even more). The North-Western, Southern and North Caucasian federal districts received little precipitation (1-12 mm), or no precipitation at all in some areas. In most parts of this territory, farmers harvested spiked cereals mainly in favorable conditions.

The agro-meteorological conditions were mostly fair for growth and development of late cereals and arable crops; in the north, they also favored ripening of spring cereals. Corn plants were still at the stage of panicle and cob flowering, locally at milk ripeness of grain.

The Southern and North-Caucasian federal districts were exposed to unfavorable conditions for the completion of yield formation in late arable crops due to heat and soil moisture deficits. These conditions were even bad in some areas because of dried up topsoil.
