Russia. Oilseed harvest surpasses all expectations

Oilseeds harvesting in Russia is drawing to a close. Will grower expectations and analyst forecasts be justified? While it is already clear now that the oilseed harvest will surpass all estimates of specialists, the question about production profitability has not an unambiguous answer yet, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Sunflower plantings for the 2016/17 crop were increased to 7498 Th ha against 6951 Th ha reported earlier. In view of the expansion of planted acreage to an all-time large size, it becomes clear that oilseeds production is to hit a new high. The only thing that is left to forecast is to what degree it will exceed the greatest crop of 2013/14 when sunseed output was above 10.5 MMT.

Many analysts, including UkrAgroConsult, based their forecasts on the average oilseed yield and took existing risks into consideration as much as possible, with the weather factor being one of them.

However, as harvesting works advance, it becomes clear that this year’s weather conditions in Russia are generally benign for sunflower ripening and harvesting.
