Russia. Winter crops still enjoyed favorable wintering conditions

On February 11-20, the agrometeorological conditions in the European part of the country were mostly fair for winter grains.

In southern parts of the Central federal district, the soil temperature at the depth of winter grains’ tillering node (3 cm) was close to 0°C, causing dormant plants to spend more nutrients on respiration and thereby undermining their hardiness, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Warm weather persisted in the Southern and North Caucasian federal districts. Daytime air temperatures reached mostly +4…7°C, with -2…2°C at night. On most days in the reporting period, slow growth of winter grains was observed in Krasnodar region and in parts of the North Caucasian provinces. In the northern half of the territory, winter crops continued dormancy in quite fair conditions. Towards February 20, the snow cover height there was 10 to 50 cm. The soil was mostly frozen to a depth of 10-20 cm.
