Russia. Winter crops were exposed to fair conditions for survival

11.12.2018

Cold weather dominated the Northwestern, Central and Volga federal districts in early December. The average daily air temperature was mostly 2-8°C below normal. The lowest air temperature was registered at -15…-10°C, locally at -25…-18°C. it became warmer after December 5 (-4…-2°C, in the daytime, -8…-5°C at night, up to -12…-10°C in the east of the territory). Mild thaws occurred in some areas on December 9-10.

During December 1-10, most areas received 10 to 20 mm of precipitation, locally up to 25-35 mm. The height of snow cover in the fields has increased mainly to 10-20 cm by now, even to 25-30 cm and more in Perm and Komi regions. The depth of soil freezing is mostly 20-40 cm (locally down to 50-60 cm). In northern areas, the soil has frozen to a depth of 2-10 cm; it is thawed in part of fields. Soil temperature at the tillering node depth of winter grains (3 cm) bottomed out at -7…-3°C (locally at -12…-9°C in the south of the Volga federal district). The agrometeorological conditions were mostly satisfactory for dormancy of crop plants. Air and soil temperatures did not drop to dangerous levels, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Variable weather was observed in the Southern and North Caucasian federal districts. On the coldest days, night air temperature fell to -3…0°C (locally to -10…-5°C). At the time, the height of snow cover in the fields ranged from 1-5 cm in the south to 10-15 cm in the north, therefore such a temperature decrease was not dangerous to wintering crops. On the warmest days, air temperature rose to 8…12°C in single southern areas of the territory, and slow plant growth in winter grains was possible there in the daytime.
