Russia. Winter harvest of sunseed added almost 1 MMT to the crop

The Russian State Statistics Service published updated information on the 2017 crop. Taking into account winter harvest, the sunseed crop amounted to 10.48 MMT in standard weight. However, this is still down 5% from the 2016 record. Additional some 0.9 MMT of sunseed was harvested this past winter, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Despite the drop in sunseed production, the total oilseed crop in 2017 was record high owing to unprecedented soybean and rapeseed crops in Russia. They offset not only the decline in sunseed output but also that in production of niche oil crops.

As a reminder, roughly 20% of sunflower plantings entered the winter unharvested. Previously, the final sunseed crop estimate made by Russian analysts equaled 10.3-10.4 MMT for the baseline scenario and 10.8-10.9 MMT for the optimistic one.
