Russian Railways to construct a port and a handling terminal in Indonesia

OJSC Russian Railways will construct a port and a handling terminal with a capacity reaching 5 MMT in Indonesia, said First Vice-President Alexandr Misharin.

Land plots have already been acquired in the coastal zone and works have been started for building the port’s first stage and a universal transshipment terminal, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Earlier, Russian Railways President Oleg Belozerov and Kereta Api Indonesia (Indonesian Railways) President Edi Sukmoro have signed a memorandum of understanding.

The document envisages joint participation in railway and logistic infrastructure development projects in Russia and Indonesia, cooperation in the field of transport machine-building and joint projects with attracting private and foreign investments in the railway development.

Indonesia proposed to the Russian Railways to take part in the country’s four transport projects – the Trans-Kalimantan, Trans-Sulavesi, Trans-Java, and Trans-Sumatra railways – with their lengths totaling 4,800 km. In addition, Indonesia expressed interest in the cooperation with the Russian Railways to develop railway infrastructure and replace the rolling stock.

Will Russia maintain leadership in the export market in future, given the current trend of port industry development? UkrAgroConsult is going to answer this question in a new market study “Russia: Record crop vs Grain-handling capacities deficit”.
