Serbia Must Make Better Use of Bumper Harvests

This year, Serbia marked a record harvest of corn and wheat, with around 8 million tons of corn and 3.1 million tons of wheat produced.

Both corn and wheat are significant export products; around half of the wheat crop and a third of the corn crop are intended for export abroad.

However, the return for both producers and Serbia’s economy would be far greater if these record yields could be exported as finished products, not as raw materials.

For this reason, the government has announced its intention to reshape agricultural policy so that in the future finished and processed exports become the priority.
