Special fats helping out the Ukrainian margarine market

The first months of the past year 2017 featured positive dynamics for Ukrainian margarine producers and optimistic forecasts for the whole calendar year – UkrAgroConsult wrote about this before. Below we’ll discuss the year’s results and what underpins the turn for the better in the margarine market.

According to official statistics, margarine output not only exceeded the previous year by almost 23%, but also hit a three-year high and reversed the downward trend in the margarine market size seen since 2010.

As a reminder, margarine production dropped to 184.1 KMT in 2016 that was its lowest since 2003. This situation had developed in the industry not only due to falling domestic demand, but also because of the breach in trade relations with the top importer of Ukrainian margarine products, i.e. with Russia.

Under such circumstances, the industry had to re-adapt and reorient that entailed a slump in the market capacity in 2015 and 2016. It was only the past year that saw a recovery of production.
