Thai rice farmers switch to corn in dry season

07.08.2018

Thai farmers in Uttaradit have turned to growing corn as an alternate crop to rice. Pichet Viriyapaha, Director-General of the Department of Cooperative Promotion said corn is planted during the dry season as the crop uses less water. In the past dry season, Tron city produced over 6000 tonnes valued at more than USD 1 million. “The Cooperative of Uttaradit did a good job in encouraging members and farmers.

They used to grow rice three times a year but now they grow high quality maize for livestock feed. They educated the farmers before planting, on soil testing, nutrient analysis, soil suitability, cost reduction and seed selection,” said Mr Pichet.
