Thailand: Rice export improves, expected to achieve 9.5 million tons goal

Thai rice export has improved and will likely total 9.5 million tons throughout this year.
Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) Director-General Duangporn Rodphaya said the rice export had shown positive signs with export orders during January - 28 November 2016 amounting to 9.18 million tons, worth 4.16 billion US dollars.
The rice export accounted for an 8.7 percent increase in volume and a 3.5 percent increase in value from the same period last year.
The DFT director-general said the export values of the rice, including Hom Mali and glutinous rice, had increased, altogether marking 77 percent of the country's total volume of rice export with the top 10 buyers mostly located in Africa and Asia.
The increase in the rice export in this year's fourth quarter was greatly attributed to rice orders from China, Hong Kong and Singapore, said the DFT chief, adding that the Thai rice can compete with others in the world market in terms of pricing and will likely achieve the 9.5-million-tons export goal set by the Ministry of Commerce.
