Turkey becomes the largest importer of Russian sunflower
In January 2017, sunflower exports from Russia totaled 11.1 KMT compared with 19.4 KMT in December 2016 and 1.7 KMT in January 2016. Since the beginning of the 2016/17 season (September-January), Russia shipped abroad 97.6 KMT of sunseed, reports UkrAgroConsult.
The record high sunflower seed crop allowed to significantly increase its exports. So, sunflower shipments to foreign market are 9 times as high as during the same time last season. At the same time, all time high 263 KMT were exported during the same period of the 2005/06 MY.
In the current 2016/17 season, the European countries and Turkey continue to increase sunseed purchases from Russia. Turkey already dominates among importers with 54% share of total Russian exports over the last five months, while the share of EU accounts for 37%. A similar situation is developing in the Iranian market (4%).
