Ukraine became the top barley supplier of Libya

According to official information, Ukraine exported 525 KMT of barley in October 2016, or 16.4% more than at the same time last year (451.1 KMT), reports UkrAgroConsult.

In total, Ukraine has increased its barley exports by 3.7% this season, to 3487.5 KMT. Saudi Arabia is still the main destination market for Ukrainian barley, though with lower shipments now. So, Ukrainian exporters shipped 1.43 MMT of barley to this country from July to October 2016/17 against 1.8 MMT at the same time a year ago. However, Ukrainian suppliers successfully offset this drop with higher exports to the Libyan market, UkrAgroConsult notes.

In the period under review, Ukraine exported roughly 620 KMT of barley to Libya, or almost 40% more than for the entire last season. Besides, market participants say another some 100 KMT of Ukrainian barley was supplied to this market in November. Thus, with Libya’s needs for imported barley forecast at 800 KMT, Ukraine has become the key supplier of this cereal crop to the country, having replaced the previous top exporter – the EU. As in the case with Tunisia, Ukrainian suppliers took over part of the Russian market share in Libya due to slow barley exports from Russia.
