Ukraine. Buckwheat and millet plantings end up may smaller than projected
Planting of spring cereals and pulses in Ukraine is drawing to a close. That of early crops is actually over. This year, farmers sowed less spring barley, wheat and oats than projected. Only the pea sowing plan is fulfilled. In addition, a substantial delay is seen in sowing of late spring niche crops such as buckwheat and millet. Its pace has slowed down substantially over recent years, therefore there is a risk of ending up with much smaller planted areas of these crops for the 2018 harvest than projected.
According to the Ag Ministry of Ukraine, 5660.7 Th ha had been seeded to sunflower by June 1, 2018, or 102% of the projected 5559.5 Th ha (official data). Seeding of this crop is almost 102.7% the progress of last year: sunflower areas totaled 5512 Th ha as of June 1, 2017.
The soybean planted area equaled 1725.4 Th ha as of June 1, or 89% of the projected 1929 Th ha (official data). Soybean seeding somewhat quickened. As of the reporting date, it was 7.4% behind last year against 8.9% a week earlier. 1864 Th ha was seeded to soybeans by June 1, 2017.
