Ukraine. Cold spell led to delay in winter grain crops emergence

In the first 10 days of October weather conditions were rainy and instable.

In Vinnitsa region soil moisture content is enough for germination of winter crops` sowings. Along with this, warmth becomes a key factor for further development. The problem of farms which delayed sowing works till present will be inevitable loss of time for drying of soil. At low temperatures this process may take 6-8 days, preconditioning delay in winter crops emergence.

In Kiev region winter crops sown in optimal terms (by September, 22) are at the stage of emergence (2nd leave formation). Taking into account absence of rains in September, farmers had to extend sowing terms till the end of optimal terms (till September 25-30) and till acceptable dates (till October, 5). But excessive rains led to delay in field works. At the same time lowering of average air temperatures to +6-7°C, starting from October 5, preconditioned delay in emergence of winter crops, sown early in October.

In Dnepropetrovsk region winter wheat sown by September 20 after bare formed 3 leaves and entered the tillering stage. Plants` height is 17-20 cm. General condition of winter crops is good and satisfactory.

On the whole plants of winter wheat undergo various stages of development depending on the sowing terms – from germination to early tillering.
