Ukraine. Condition of winter cereal crops

Precipitation of various duration and rates occurred on October 11-15. The significant warm spell on October 11-20 along with sufficient soil moisture content had a beneficial effect on growth and development of winter cereals of early and optimum planting dates, reports UkrAgroConsult.

The optimum and allowable dates (long-term average) for planting winter cereals have already expired in the Forest and Forest-Steppe and are close to an end in the Steppe. Planting after allowable terms entails a certain risk of emergence failure and winter-kill of crops. However, scientists believe this year’s planting of winter crops can be continued until the end of October in the south, west and locally in other regions due to sufficient soil moisture and above-normal air temperatures. The experience of recent years shows that such late crops can produce fair grain yields, which in most cases exceed those of early spring crops, particularly in the Steppe zone.
