Ukraine. Condition of winter cereals

Crops of winter wheat and winter barley are in different conditions – from emergence to tillering – subject to their planting time, reports UkrAgroConsult. Early-sown crops have developed 3-5.3 tillers per plant, while crops of optimal planting time have 1.5-3.2 tillers per plant. Winter barley planted within the optimal time window is at tillering stage.

According to UkrAgroConsult’s data, this year’s growth and development of winter cereals were much worse than in 2015. The above-ground biomass of winter wheat and winter barley is 1.3-1.9 times smaller than usual. This stems from lower daily air temperatures in October, when they averaged 1.8°C below normal. Additionally, considerable alternation between daytime and night temperatures also had an adverse impact on growth processes.

Winter cereal crops are mostly in fair and good condition, dormant at the 2nd stage of organogenesis (tillering).

Further condition of winter cereals will entirely depend on the temperature pattern, availability and height of snow cover. Uneven snow cover with a height of 2 to 25 cm was seen in Ukraine towards the end of November.
