Ukraine. Do upcoming frosts jeopardize winter crops?

Sharp cold snap came to Ukraine on January 6, 2016. The freeze front advanced from the northern west of the country. It will spread all over Ukraine within a few days.

Meteorologists predict that air temperatures in Ukraine will fall on average to 13-17°C below zero, even to -20°C in some areas. Such a temperature pattern is expected to persist in the country for more than five days. At the same time, precipitation is forecast to occur unevenly over the country from January 6-8.

It is worth noting that the majority of Ukraine’s fields are covered with at most 4-6 cm of snow as of January 5. Its height only exceeds 10-12 cm in some northeastern parts of the country. The current level of snow cover is insufficient for reliable protection of winter crops against frosts harsher than -15°C during five days. Survival of the upcoming frost by winter crops will entirely depend on the amount of snowfalls in this period, UkrAgroConsult notes.
