Ukraine exported a record wheat volume in January

Ukraine exported 1214.5 KMT of wheat in January 2017. This was two and a half times more than in January 2016 (465.9 KMT) and hit an all-time high for this month, reports UkrAgroConsult.

As before, the main destination market for Ukrainian wheat in January was India, which absorbed 64% of total exports at the time. This season’s share of India in Ukrainian wheat exports has already reached 20%. Over this period, not only India has become the top market for Ukrainian wheat but also Ukraine has appeared the main supplier of wheat to India.

Australia, Ukraine’s key rival in the Indian wheat market, exported some 0.9 MMT of wheat there in H1 2016/17. The shipments are expected to rise in the latter half of the season. According to preliminary information, Australia already exported a record grain volume of over 4 MMT in January. The previous high (3 MMT) was hit in January 2012. The boost in exports is driven by strong demand for Australian grain from Saudi Arabia, China and India. Australia has marketed more than 8.2 MMT of wheat this season. Its exports for the entire season may total 22‑25 MMT.
