Ukraine harvests 14.5 mln tonnes of grain so far – ministry


Ukraine has threshed 14.5 million tonnes of grain so far during this year’s harvest with an average yield of 3.36 tonnes per hectare, the agriculture ministry said.

Farmers had harvested 4.3 million hectares of grain as of July 21, the ministry said.

Ukraine has sowed 14.3 million hectares of grain this year, including 6.28 million of wheat, 4.47 million of maize, 2.46 million of barley and around 1 million of other grains and cereals.

The ministry said farmers had harvested 9.1 million tonnes of wheat from 2.5 million hectares and 4.6 million tonnes of barley from 1.4 million hectares. They have also collected 741,000 tonnes of peas from 76 percent of the sown area and 1.1 million tonnes of rapeseed from 56 percent of the sown area.

The ministry gave no forecast for the full 2017 grain harvest, which analysts and weather forecasters estimate at between 59 million and 62 million tonnes, including 23 million to 25 million tonnes of wheat.

Ukraine harvested a record 66 million tonnes of grain in 2016.
