Ukraine produces 1.2 mln tonnes of sugar in 2013/2014 marketing season


Ukraine has produced 1.169 million tonnes of sugar from the new harvest beets since the beginning of the 2013/2014 marketing season as of December 20, 2013, the Ukrtsukor Association of Sugar Producers has reported.

According to the association, the current volume of production is 43.8% lower than on the same date last season. Four plants are currently engaged in the processing of sugar beets, while last year their number was 16. Sugar plants received more than nine million tonnes of sugar beets as of December 20, 2013, and 8.8 million tonnes have already been processed.

Ukrtsukor also said that 750 tonnes of sugar was exported from Ukraine to Russia in December 2013. This amount was delivered by rail to Smolensk (Russia) in two batches.

As reported, this year farmers harvested about 11 million tonnes of sugar beets. According to the forecast of the Ukrtsukor association, sugar production in the current marketing season will reach 1.2-1.4 million tonnes.

On December 11, 2013, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to increase the minimum purchasing price for sugar in the 2014/2015 marketing year by 1% compared with the current season, to UAH 4,722.68 per tonne (excluding VAT). The decision also foresees an increase in the minimum purchasing price for sugar beets by 1.6%, to UAH 343.55 per tonne.
