Ukraine. Railroad transportation in 2017 - grain strengthens its positions

According to the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine, in 2017 railway transportation decreased 1.4%, compared to 2016. It is worth noting that among the main cargos, only transportation of construction materials and grain improved.

Due to the bumper crop in the 2016/17 marketing year, in 2017 grain handling by rail set a new record reaching 35.7 MMT. That was 11.9% more than the previous year. The share of grain supply in the overall structure of railroad transportation kept growing to 10.5%. This trend increases an importance of grain cargo presence on railway and reinforces the necessity to take into account interests of agricultural products providers, reports UkrAgroConsult.

In 2017, an average monthly volume of grain handling increased to 3.0 MMT, compared to the previous season’s 2.7 MMT, which was achieved due to high exports in the first half of the year.

UkrAgroConsult believes that in 2018 logistics of agricultural products will continue to depend largely on railway, and transportation volumes will slightly grow or remain at the previous year’s level. At the same time, according to “Ukrzaliznytsia”, in 2018 grain transportation volumes are expected to increase.
