Ukraine. Seeding of spring cereals and pulses caught up with last year’s

16.05.2018

Grains. Ukrainian farmers had sown 2250 Th ha of early spring cereals and pulses by May 14 (94% of their projected area) against 2310 Th ha by May 15, 2018, reports UkrAgroConsult.

The planted area includes 164 Th ha (94%) of spring wheat against 171 Th ha in 2017 and 1487 Th ha (93%) of spring barley against 1561 Th ha last year. Noteworthy is that the pace of spring barley seeding had somewhat quickened by the reporting date. So, 15 Th ha was seeded to barley on May 11-14 against just 10 Th ha on May 7-11. However, according to our estimates, the risk of a shortfall in this crop’s planting still persists, and it may approximate 5%.

Oat plantings already total 185 Th ha (90%) compared to 197 Th ha a year ago. The area seeded to peas currently equals 414 Th ha (98%) against 381 Th ha at the same time a year ago.

Corn planting is drawing to an end. 3996 Th ha had been seeded to corn for grain by the reporting date (87% of the plan) against 4037 Th ha by May 15, 2017.

Oil crops. The Agriculture Ministry of Ukraine reports 5034.6 Th ha seeded to sunflower by May 14, 2018 (91% of the officially projected 5555.6 Th ha). This crop’s seeding is almost 105% the progress of last year. 4800 Th ha was seeded to sunflower a year ago.

Soybean planting slowed down this past week. So, 1309.6 Th ha had been planted to soybeans by May 14 (68% of the officially forecast 1928.9 Th ha). Their planting is 11.7% behind last year, when 1483 Th ha of soybeans were sown by this same date.
