Ukraine. Soil drought hinders development of spring crops

06.06.2017

Rains that occurred over the recent days in South Ukraine were actually ineffective (0.2-2.0 mm), therefore soil moisture reserves are rapidly exhausting there. The one-meter soil horizon in winter cereal plantings contains a critical 7-23 mm of productive moisture in central, south-eastern and southern parts of Kherson region. This content amounts to 94 mm in its northern areas and 39 to 67 mm in the rest of the region (insufficient). Due to soil moisture shortages (soil drought), premature yellowing of not only lower-tier leaves but also of upper-tier ones is observed in some parts of the southern regions. Almost all winter wheat plantings are at the stage of flowering, while early-ripening cultivars of early planting dates are at the kernel formation stage.

Winter wheat plantings after non-fallow predecessors are in much worse condition, which ranges from poor to fair. Soil moisture shortages and premature leaf yellowing are also seen in them.

Almost all plantings of winter barley are at the stages of flowering and kernel formation. It also suffers from soil moisture shortages, therefore lower-tier leaves prematurely yellowed.

Corn in this region was seeded mostly in irrigated areas; the stages of its plants vary from 2-3 leaves to 7-10 leaves (crops of earlier planting dates). Crop condition is primarily good and satisfactory, though single early-sown crops are sparse.

In most fields, plants of winter wheat and winter triticale are at the 8th stage of organogenesis: the beginning of heading / heading (depending on the cultivar, planting date and predecessors). Signs of soil drought are spotted in some areas – it hinders development of spring cereals, corn, peas and other field crops.
