Ukraine. Weather conditions favored ripening of late grain crops

The agrometeorological conditions during the last week were fair for ripening and yield formation in late, vegetable and melon crops. Rains that fell on July 21-31 somewhat increased soil moisture content.

Dry, hot weather dominated the country on August 1-10. The average daily air temperature was 1.7-4.5°С above normal, reaching 21.0-26.5°С. The highest air temperature was registered at 27-31°С, even at 30-36°С in the southern regions. At the time, the land surface heated to 53-63°С. The lowest temperature – in the coldest nights – was down at 14-18°С.

Corn is at the stage of milk ripeness. It has on average 2-3 cobs per plant. Corn is mostly in fair condition. In case of favorable weather in August-September (i.e. a gradual air temperature downturn and moderate precipitation), the corn harvest will begin tentatively from September 15, UkrAgroConsult’s analysts report.

Millet and sorghum have developed panicles. Flax and buckwheat are at the stage of seed ripening. Rains while buckwheat flowering prevented bees from pollinating this crop to the full extent. This has an adverse effect on the number of kernels in plants. Crop condition is rated mostly good and fair.

According to the Irrigated Farming Institute, sunflower plants are at the ripening stage, only late-sown ones are at flowering. In sunflower fields, productive soil moisture content in the one-meter layer is very low, varying within 8-37 mm.

Bean formation continues in soybean crops. Plants are in good and fair condition.
