Ukraine. Winter and spring crop condition

Last week weather conditions were rather instable in Ukraine with air temperature fluctuations. Starting from July, 18 hot and dry weather pattern changed into cool and rainy, which caused heavy showers across Ukraine.

Winter grain crops (wheat, barley, rye and triticale) all over Ukraine are at the stage of complete ripeness. Crops condition is mostly good. Rains and strong winds caused some crops lodging in the fields, which impeded field works and further works with harvested grain.

Spring grain crops (barley, wheat, triticale and oats) and legumes (lupine, peas) are also at the stage of complete ripeness or at its final stage.

Long term rains may hinder pollination processes in crops, which undergo the stage of flowering (buckwheat and corn hybrids), impact spring grain ripening and crop formation. Along with this, considerable increase in soil moisture stocks was beneficial for the further development of corn plants, which are currently in good condition. Excessive air temperatures during the daytime had been stressful for corn, which preconditioned some dry out of bottom leaves. Corn varieties of early and optimal seeding terms are in the end of critical water consumption stage. Currently their condition is good, but the quantity of rains in the last week of July- first week of August should be of the highest importance for the corn grain formation.
