Ukraine. Winter grains condition best in the past three years

The weather conditions in the first half of November promoted active formation of the secondary system in winter wheat with different plant development degrees (one to four tillers per plant). This is vital for underdeveloped plantings, reports UkrAgroConsult. Important physiological and biochemical processes are underway in winter crop plants in such weather conditions. Low above-zero temperatures facilitated vernalization of plants that secures the formation of generative organs (heads) in spring. Undergoing these processes in due time is a basis for active hardening of winter crops against adverse winter conditions.

Winter wheat sown at the best time (before September 22) after the best predecessors is beginning the second stage of organogenesis (tillering). Plant height ranges within 13-16 cm, plant density within 420‑450 per m2, and tillering coefficient equals 1.0-1.2 there.

According to UkrAgroConsult, as of November 17, 2016, winter cereals emerged on an area of 6042.2 Th ha that is 87.2% of their planted acreage. This is far above last year’s percentage. At the same time in 2015, seedlings of winter cereals were only seen on 71.1% of planted acreage (4701 Th ha out of 6613.4 Th ha).
