Ukraine. Winter rapeseed started emerged on 96.1% of planted area

The period of February 27 - March 3 featured warmer-than-usual weather with minor precipitation. The average daily air temperature was +50C, or 2-70C above normal. Air temperature peaked at +12-160C in the south and bottomed out at -50C in the north. In the southern regions, the soil surface warmed up to +16-220C in the daytime. Little precipitation occurred almost all across the country in the form of rain and drizzle. Precipitation rates ranged from 1 to 43 mm. The depth of soil freezing varied within 15-30 mm as of late February. Above-normal temperatures melted snow cover in the fields almost all over Ukraine and destroyed ice crust seen since mid-December 2016.

These weather conditions started the resumption of plant growth in winter crops, or 15-18 days ahead of usual time, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Almost all the water that long stayed in field depressions is gone now. According to surveys, winter rape plantings not exposed to long waterlogging have suffered no considerable losses – just 3-7% of plants.

Winter rapeseed was planted on an area of 899.2 Th ha and emerged on 864.3 Th ha (96.1%). 40.1% of its plantings are in good condition and 0.2% of winter rape acreage was lost.
