Ukrainian agrarian exports grew by $321 mln in January 2019 - Agrarian Policy Ministry


In January 2019, Ukraine exported agricultural products for a total sum of $1.7 billion, an increase of almost 22.5% compared to the corresponding period in 2018, according to Deputy Agrarian Policy and Food Minister of Ukraine on European Integration Olha Trofimtseva.

“In January 2019, the Ukrainian agrarian exports again demonstrated growth and increased by $321 million comparted to January 2018,” Trofimtseva stressed.

She added that the largest share of Ukrainian agricultural exports was traditionally formed by grain crops (44.6%), vegetable oil (19.8%), and oil seeds (9.7%).

“I would like to separately note changes in the regional structure of agrarian exports. The EU countries took the first place among our sales markets, products worth $668 million were exported there in January 2019. Exports to Asian countries reached $641 million, and African countries bought Ukrainian agrarian products worth $292.2 million and took the third place,” the official said.

At the same time, Trofimtseva said about the problems of export logistics, in particular, railway logistics, especially for grain and oilseeds.

“As topical logistics issues remain on the agenda, the Agrarian Policy Ministry, together with representatives of the sector, decided to resume the work of regular interdepartmental headquarters so that to urgently resolve agricultural logistics issues and to focus not only on the current working issues, but also more strategic issues of the agrarian logistics,” she said.

The top five countries importing Ukrainian agrarian and food products in January 2019 were Egypt ($153.6 million), Netherlands ($149.9 million), India ($ 143.9 million), Spain ($135.8 million), and Turkey ($ 12.3 million).

"During this period, the imports of agricultural and food products increased by 9.5% compared to January 2019 and totaled $462.6 million. Ukraine’s top imports were fruits, nuts, fish, tobacco and its products, cocoa beans and chocolate, cereals, coffee, tea, spices and butter,” Trofimtseva added.
