Ukrainian barley. Preliminary 2016/17 results and outlook for the new season

The 2016/17 barley season in Ukraine is over. Let’s sum up its preliminary results and discuss outlooks for the new marketing year 2017/18.

According to the State Fiscal Service, 5.34 MMT of barley was exported from Ukraine this past season by June 30 that is 21.4% more than shipped abroad in 2015/16 season. This is a second all-time high in Ukraine’s history of barley exports. The largest ever volume of Ukrainian barley exports – 6.23 MMT – was registered in 2009/10 season.

Traditionally, Saudi Arabia was still the key end market for Ukrainian barley in 2016/17 season, but its export share shrank to 42% against last year’s 53%. This trend stems from diversification of exports to other end markets, not from a drop in Ukrainian market shipments to this destination.

In general, Ukraine increased barley exports to almost all the key destinations this season.

At the same time, market players are not happy with the new-crop outlook. According to UkrAgroConsult’s estimates, barley production in the country may decrease to a five-year low.
