Ukrainian sunseed exports to Turkey hit a four-year low

Ukraine exported 2.5 KMT of sunseed in October 2017 that is down 30.5% from the previous month (3.6 KMT) and almost nine times less than in October 2016 (21.9 KMT). Export shipments for the first two months of the current 2017/18 season (September-October) decreased four times year-on-year to 6.1 KMT against 25 KMT in September-October 2016/17.

This season, Ukrainian sunseed exports face not only a drop in the number of their end markets, but also contraction of still available ones. As before, the main end market is the European Union (79% of total exports). Turkey, being the second top importer (10%), reduced sunseed purchases to a four-year low of 0.6 KMT against 17.6 KMT in 2016: the country prioritizes sunseed of own production.

In view of a sunseed crop shortfall in Ukraine and keener competition between crushers in the domestic market, UkrAgroConsult expects sunseed exports to plummet by more than 70% in the current 2017/18 season.
