Ukrainian winter cereals in good and fair condition

09.01.2018

In late December, the soil was frozen to 1-3 cm in Zhytomyr, Rivne, Volyn regions and some parts of Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi regions. It was thawed in the rest of the country. According to the Crop Farming Institute, the soil temperature at a 5-cm depth equaled 2.80С on January 5. The lowest soil temperature at the tillering node depth was reported by the Carpathian Agriculture Institute at 00С that is far above the killing temperature level. According to calculations of agrometeorologists, the killing temperature for winter wheat is -11-120С at the stages of emergence to three leaves and -13-140С at the tillering stage. The respective temperature values for winter rye and winter barley are -14-14.50С and -9-100С.

As average daily air temperatures have been long staying above zero, slow growth of winter crops was seen this past week. Scientists of the Crop Farming Institute monitored the state of winter cereals on January 4. As expected, they detected natural morphophysiological changes in plants: a moderate increase in the size of growing points, the tillering coefficient and plant weight. Also, such weather conditions provoke consumption of underaccumulated nutrients by cereal plants and undermine their winter hardiness. In general, the state of winter crops is assessed as good and fair, reports UkrAgroConsult.

A long thaw is now under way, and plants have almost lost frost hardiness. It will be restored after the plants pass the second hardening stage once again. This physiological transformation requires time, enough carbohydrates and the possibility of a gradual temperature decrease.
