US rail transportation of grain products in the week ended January 7 totaled 21,476 cars, up 0.9% from the corresponding week a year ago, the Association of American Railroads said Wednesday.

Rail transportation of chemical products fell 11.5% year on year to 28,580 cars. AAR designates fuel-grade ethanol as a chemical product, the group said in its weekly report.

Total carloads saw a 7.7% year-on-year decrease to 221,146 cars for the week, AAR said. Including total carloads and intermodal units -- which totaled 220,271 units, a 14.9% decrease from 2016 -- total US railroad traffic reached 441,417 cars, 11.4% lower year on year.
