Uzbekistan and China imported over 90% of Kazakh sunseed

Despite the decrease in exports towards the end of the season, the current marketing year still shows record volumes of Kazakh sunseed exports. So, shipments jumped to 270.8 KMT in September-May 2017/18. That is already more than in the whole of last season (270 KMT). They grew due to a rise in the sunseed crop, which reached a record 0.9 MMT in the past two seasons, reports UkrAgroConsult.

May exports of sunseed decreased by 18% to 17.7 KMT compared to a year ago and by 32% against the previous month.

In Kazakhstan’s market of sunseed, competition for available sunseed is observed mostly between the traditional buyers – Uzbekistan and China – which absorb a combined over 90% of total exports. However, the current season features a slump in sunseed shipments to Uzbekistan (133 KMT against 197.4 KMT a year ago) and, on the contrary, expanded exports to China (114.4 KMT against 100.9 KMT).

In addition, Iran boosted sunseed imports from Kazakhstan more than threefold in the first nine months of the current season (12.3 KMT against 3.7 KMT a year ago).
