Romania. Abundant snows improve water level in soil

In spite of the heavy snows recently, the projections for this year’s wheat remain reserved since the water lacks in the most crop-intensive areas. Moreover, the areas where the recent blizzards removed the snow would be hit by both low temperatures and relative lower water levels.

Abundant snows in mid-January in southern Romania helped to some extent the wheat crops as the water level in the soil must improve after several months of severe drought. In August to November, the monthly average water falls were only 40 liters per square meter compared to an expected average of 200 liters. December was also a dry month in the most areas of the country.

The water level in soil will remain below satisfactory for the eastern and part of the southern regions of the country, and satisfactory in the rest of the areas in late January and early February, the national weather institute estimates.

The freezing episode expected for the next period will damage the crops in the regions where the snow layer is insufficient (below 10cm) – because of the blizzards last week. Temperatures below minus 20 Celsius will be frequent for the period.
